"My little piece of Scotland"

written by Ewan Harold (10 years old)

Whitehills used to be a busy fishing port & even today
it's the place to have a whale of a time

My little piece of Scotland has to be my favourite coastal village, Whitehills, which is just along the Banff coast. I love this village so much because it has many lovely views. It also has a fun brae, which me & my friends go whizzing down at high speeds on cardboard.
I also like photography, & Whitehills is one of the best photographic areas I know for animals & landscapes. Recently I have photographed seals, dolphins, whales, all kinds of birds, huge shoals of fish & stunning sunsets. I usually find myself having to scramle over rocks to get the best picture. There is a caravan park in Whitehills. It's open all summer & we are always sad when it closes. Downies is a fish factory with a shop. They sell all kinds of lovely fish. We love to walk there to get our lunch, then we take it back to the caravan & prepare it for barbecuing.
My Gran was brought up in the village & said that it used to be a busy fishing harbour with its own fish market, but now there are only a few fishing boatsi n the marina, which is packed with yachts. We enjoy walking to the marina & going on the pontoon. I really enjoy trying to spot fish & crabs while the pontoon rises & falls with the waves. We wander round to the lighthouse & climb the steps to the parapet, then savour the stunning views while the windblows through our hair.
Every year there is a big gala in the park. There are bouncy castles, food (lovely fresh downies kippers, burgers etc.), raffles, spin the wheel, a tombola & a boat race. The park is great fun & is always a good place for a game of Hide & Seek or Tig & Tag on the climbing frames.
It's easy to make friends at Whitehills as children come from all round Scotlandto visit. My friends, my brother & I have had Easter egg hunts, bonfires, barbecues, Halloween parties & fishing challenges while we have been here.
I really hope you enjoyed my little piece of Scotland.
